Vernissage Poster - Abigail Jeroso

PROJECT
MANDATE

Creation of a poster announcing the Dawson College 2023 Graphic Design vernissage and exhibition. It should represent the graduating year; emphasize what makes the program’s batch of 2023 different from the past years.

DESIGN
THINKING

After being in the program for the past 3 years, I learned that graphic designers don’t only make pretty things. The designs have to be effective, and it’s a process. It involves hours and hours of brainstorming and sketching to only come up with a decent concept, then additional hours to recreate that idea digitally. Sometimes you have to get down and dirty, and this program requires money.

As for my batch, we all have part-time jobs along with our heavy schedules to make things work. We hustled to get through the program and will keep hustling in the workforce. We do it because we’re passionate about what we’re doing and have fun doing what we do. That’s how I chose the keyword Hustle for my poster.

DESIGN
MAKING

My approach for this poster was partially inspired by modern Swiss design in terms of tight margins, systematic typography, and a touch of contemporary design. Those decisions weren’t only made because it’s a style I’m greatly fond of but to represent how the program is built: it’s strict and compact but well organized.

That feeling of hustling is represented by the combination of negative space, the juxtaposition of the word hustle (created with ripped-up paper) and the sharp type. There’s usually a lot happening when hustling, but you’re handed a great and satisfying result in the end. Combining the poster’s elements effectively represents that lifestyle and our graduating year.
