Social Issue Poster - Abigail Jeroso

PROJECT
MANDATE

Creation and design of a poster that effectively communicates an important social issue.

DESIGN
THINKING

After many trials and errors, I decided to talk about Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) through my poster. It is a mental health condition in which an individual's personality fragments into two or more distinct identities or personality states, also known as alters.

The person may experience gaps in memory, changes in behaviour or identity, and a sense of detachment from their surroundings. DID was previously known as multiple personality disorder. This disorder affects about 1% to 2% of the population, but some studies suggest that about 7% have the condition, which remains undiagnosed.

DESIGN
MAKING

To represent DID clearly and respectfully, I chose to use multiple shapes that don't look too different from each other in different colours. I also added different sets of eyes on a couple. This is to communicate the aspect that multiple people are living within one body, and they all differ from one another.

A person with DID in its early stages of discovery could suffer from problems relating to memory and feeling detached from their own body. They could also start realizing the presence of their different alters. This experience could lead to extreme confusion, fear, disbelief, and not knowing who they are, so I added the phrase "Who am I?" to portray those feelings.

Living with this disorder is stressful. Due to mental health stigma and its relatively rare diagnosis, it doesn't get as much attention as it should. So I hope, through this poster, that I brought even the slightest attention to it.
